Dr Valasia Iakovoglou is a graduate of Iowa State University, USA. She has more than 20-yrs of national/international research and teaching experience as an Ecophysiologist/Silviculture expert in seedling production and Restoration/Conservation of Ecosystems with emphasis on Biodiversity under the challenges of Climate Change. She has received numerous scholarships, awards and recognitions. She is an editor at five international journals and a reviewer in more than ten with one of them being the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She has numerous publications with more than ten books/book chapters and 50 peer-reviewed papers. She is active in many scientific societies such as the Mediterranean Experts of Climate and environmental Change (MedECC) and associations such as the “Association of Inter-Balkan Woman’s Cooperation Societies (AIWCS)” of UNESCO Center, where she serves as Board Member. Currently she is the Director of the Ecotourism Sector of the UNESCO chair Con-E-Ect and a visiting professor at the MSc program “Man and Water”.

Professor Mohamed Hazem Kalaji graduated in 1983 from Agricultural Faculty, Aleppo University, Syria. In 1993, he received a Ph.D. degree at Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW). In 2019 he came to be a full professor. Recently, he belongs to a group of worldwide recognized specialists in the field of plant physiology, in particular in the field of photosynthesis. His research focuses on functioning, bioenergetics, and efficiency of photosynthetic apparatus, plant reactions to abiotic and biotic stressors, chlorophyll fluorescence, gas exchange of plants, plant talk, and machine learning. The scientific achievements of Professor Kalaji are expressed in more than 200 scientific papers and 6 books (2 in Polish, and 1 in Italian, Russian, English, and Arabic), and 23 book chapters (HI = 30). Kalaji worked as a Vice-Chair of the Maria Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) call at the European Commission in Brussels (H2020) and is an Expert of several groups. As part of international contacts, he has established cooperation with dozens of institutions and universities from around the world. He was a supervisor of 10 Ph.D. students and reviewed several more than 700 national and international projects, and over 200 scientific papers in international scientific journals. He is also the editor of several international journals. In 2019 and 2020, he was distinguished as the most cited scientist from Poland and belonged to the elite of 0.1% most cited scientists in the World.

He performed research stays at the Université de Paris-Sud (Paris, France), University of Delaware (Newark, USA), Fraunhofer-Institut für Lebensmitteltechnologie und Verpackung (Munich, Germany), Central Science Laboratory (Norwich and York, UK), TNO-Voeding (Zeist, Netherlands), Packaging Industries Research Association (Leatherhead, UK) and The Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology (Gothenburg, Sweden). He is editor of 4 national books. He published book chapters in 10 national and 14 international books. He directed 15 doctoral theses and participated in lots of competitive research projects, of which he was principal investigator at 20. He has numerous publications in international journals). His research group is specialized in chromatographic separations (GC-MS and LC-MS) and molecular biology and proteomics. He investigates the distribution of agricultural and environmental organic chemical contaminants in the food production chain, and how improving the sensory and functional quality of food, with an eye on the food chain globally, integrating environment, agriculture and food with nutrition and public health issues. His focus today is on the study of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the point of view of public health (epidemiology, toxicity of mixtures, metabolites ...), and on the study of secondary metabolites in plant foods, exploring the molecular mechanisms that explain their activity.
